We all know that Sustainability is the way of the world. There is no good argument for acting UNsustainably – as long as you care about yourself, your family, your community, your country, your way of life, your security, your health, and the Red Sox. Sure, it helps if you care about polar bears too, but Sustainability is much more fundamental than that: do we want things to go on, or to stop? Do we want to be the generation that “ate the whole thing” or do we want our kids and community to have as good a life as we have now? To ask the question is to answer it.
Once we’ve realized that Sustainability is the context the next question is what do we DO about it? There are many ways of acting, being, getting involved, and learning and that’s what Sustainable Wellesley is here to help with. One of the most powerful ways to make a difference is through our local community – through our Town. We are already blessed with a community that has a high awareness of green issues, and a strong commitment to preserving our way of life and the character of our town, so we are starting on a strong base.
Still, there is always more to be done, and as the Town is considering a re-imagining of our structure it is useful to understand what it is we have today, how it works, and what is at stake. With slow and fitful progress at the national level, cities and towns across the country have led on many important aspects of sustainability, and this trend is accelerating. Wellesley should work to stay in the vanguard of this movement, for the sake of sustainability itself, and also to preserve part of what makes our Town uniquely attractive.
For that reason we are starting a series on Sustaining Our Town, and look forward to hearing from you as we raise some of the questions that must be addressed as we look towards our future.
