Mission & Goals

Wellesley Green Schools

Mission

Wellesley Green Schools is a collaborative group of students, parents and staff working together to reduce Wellesley schools' ecological footprints, and inspire students to create a healthy sustainable world.

Our 15-year-old volunteer organization accomplishes a lot without a big commitment.

Green Team Representatives' Activities Include:
  • Sharing some cost savings and other ideas at PTO meetings—encourage the use of our SMART Event Guide, help champion sustainability initiatives, and advocate for the Green Team budget.
  • Partnering with the Garden Team to help our school gardens grow and thrive.
  • Connecting with Green Team reps from across town at a few of the 5 annual Wellesley Green Schools meetings to swap ideas, collaborate, and build momentum together.
  • Joining occasional Central Council meetings (shared among reps) to help represent WGS and stay connected to district-wide initiatives.
  • Helping to make a real impact in the cafeteria by supporting recycling, food donation, and other waste-diversion efforts.
  • Putting Green Team funds to good use on projects students and staff can see and enjoy—like garden supplies, reusable tablecloths, hydration stations, and more.
  • Supporting fun and healthy community initiatives like Safe Routes to School and Walk to School activities.
  • Spreading the word about anti-idling and other simple habits that make a big difference for cleaner air around our schools.
  • Collaborating with the School Committee and local town organizations to help advocate for healthier, more sustainable school buildings and HVAC improvements.
You’ll be joining a welcoming, passionate group of parents and community members who care about making our schools healthier, greener, and more connected—while having fun along the way!

Goals

1.  Climate Action Plan:  Utilize Wellesley's Climate Action Plan to guide our sustainability efforts in WPS
2.  Transportation: Develop initiatives to reduce school traffic/emissions by promoting walk/bike/bus options and anti-idling
3.  Waste Diversion:  Reduce waste in classrooms, cafeteria and at school events by recycling and composting and utilizing SMART Event Guide recommendations
4.  Buildings:  Work with School Committee and other stakeholders to ensure that new and existing schools are meeting sustainability goals
