One seat for a one-year term.
The Moderator presides over Town Meeting, regulating proceedings, and deciding all questions of order. The Moderator also appoints citizens to five standing committees. These committees are the Advisory Committee, the Audit Committee, four of the nine members of the Community Preservation Committee, the Human Resources Board, and the Permanent Building Committee.
Question Given that the Moderator is responsible for making appointments to five important town committees, how will you ensure that members of these committees understand that Wellesley has an emissions reduction goal?
Mark Kaplan -
Throughout my four years as Wellesley's Town Moderator, the greatest number of appointments that I have made is, by far, to the fifteen member Advisory Committee.I personally interview all candidates for appointment to the Advisory Committee and ,in the process, I use a standard interview form so that all candidates are asked the same questions and are given the opportunity to express their views on the same topics, One of the topics on that interview form is "Sustainability/Energy"
I inform all interviewees that this will be an important factor in many of the issues that they will be dealing with if they should be appointed to serve on the Advisory Committee and I solicit their views on the topic. In the course of the discussion,I inform them that the Town has adopted certain emission reduction standards that they will need to be aware of and to take into account in their consideration of certain of the issues that will come before them if they are appointed to Advisory.
The topic is also raised by me in a less formal way in interviewing new candidates for the Permanent Building Committee, but less so in interviewing candidates for the Audit, Community Preservation and Human Resources Committees due to the specialized focus of those committees.
