Moderator Candidate

One seat out of one is open (one-year term)
The Moderator presides over Town Meeting, regulating proceedings, and deciding all questions of order. The Moderator also appoints citizens to five standing committees.  These committees are the Advisory Committee, the Audit Committee, four of the nine members of the Community Preservation Committee, the Human Resources Board, and the Permanent Building Committee.

Q1. What is your track record on environmental sustainability, including any related interests, experience, or initiatives?

A1.
Mark Kaplan -
My wife and I both recycle our waste and own a hybrid automobile. I am a member and /or regular contributor to various organizations that focus on the environment such as the Mass Rivers Alliance, the Sierra Club, the Trustees of Reservations, the Polly Hill Arboretum (on Martha's Vineyard) and the Sheriff's Meadow Foundation (also on MV).

Q2. Given that the Moderator is responsible for making appointments to five important town committees, what will you do to ensure that at least some members of these committees will bring an understanding of  environmental issues to Town matters under consideration?

A2.

Mark Kaplan -

One of the standard questions that I ask and topics that I discuss during all interviews for the Advisory Committee pertains to the candidate/applicants' views on energy and sustainability issues. However, I also inform all such candidate/applicants that there is not necessarily any "right" answer to any of the several  questions that I might ask during the interviews as my primary focus is on trying to insure that as many different constituencies in town as possible are represented on that 15 member committee.
