Got Kids In School? Wellesley Green Schools wants to (re)connect with you!

10/6/2021

Picture
You are invited for a Wellesley Green Schools get together on Tuesday, October 19th from 10am to 11:30am at 76 Cleveland Rd (between Weston and Westgate).

Wellesley Green Schools is collaborative group of caregivers, students and staff working together to reduce Wellesley schools' ecological footprints, and inspire students to create a healthy sustainable world.

We hope to meet outside so dress warmly while enjoying hot cider on the deck with blankets. If need be, we will go inside masked. Topics include:
  • Learn about Safe Routes to School program from Wellesley School Committee member Catherine Mirick.
  • Share what is important to you/your school community this academic year.
  • How can our school community help Wellesley meet its goal of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050? We can frame it knowing that buildings (municipal, residential and commercial) represent 53% of our greenhouse gas emissions in town, followed by transportation at 46% and only 1% from waste.
Please join us! If you can, please email us at info@sustainablewellesley.com so we know how many are coming.

Why I love My Electric Car -- Tonight @ 7.30pm

9/30/2021

Picture
Join the Zoom TONIGHT at 7.30pm to hear one woman's story how she walked away from tailpipe emissions and is loving her electric car. Its a great way you can take real action.

Register here.

Sharon Kirby, a member of Sustainable Wellesley, generally tries to “do the right thing.”  When it was time to buy a new car, she did her homework, ultimately choosing an Electric Vehicle (EV).  She is so thrilled with her choice that she offered to share her research with us in this simple half-hour presentation. She has some surprising discoveries about Electric Vehicles and Hybrids.  There will be plenty of time for questions afterward.

For car lovers, prepare to get excited and know you will be defending the planet as well. Believe it or not, 43% of Wellesley’s carbon emissions are due to the use of gas and diesel vehicles that rely on internal combustion engines. In other words, transportation in and around Wellesley is one of the single largest cause of greenhouse gases in our town. So when you drive; drive electric.

There are a variety of mobility options in and around Wellesley. If you are in the market for a car- new or pre-owned - small or large - join the conversation tonight  and/or head over to the parking lot next to the library to see a variety of electric and hybrid cars this Saturday, October 2nd from 1-4pm.  See and talk to owners of

Polestar 2
Mustang Mach-E
Tesla Model Y
Audi e-tron SUV
MINI Countryman Plug-In
Hyundai KONA
Chevrolet Bolt
Chevrolet Volt
Toyota Prius Prime
Tesla Model 3
Volkswagen ID.4
Nissan LEAF
Chrysler Pacifica

Register here or just come on by.

Both events are free and open to all. Ask about incentives on electric vehicles!

Walk With Us In The Parade Tomorrow 1-3

9/28/2021

Picture
Bring your family, neighbors and friends to march with us in the Wellesley Parade tomorrow from 1-3pm.

Enjoy the shout outs and cheers from friendly spectators along the route. You can feel the environmental enthusiasm in town.

We will be encouraging actions that will help us meet the Town wide goal of being Net Zero by 2050. Help us get the word out on Sunday Oct. 3rd.

We will be lining up at 12.45pm on the corner of Elm and Washington Streets (Pole #5). Should be fun. Strollers welcome.

Make Some Time for Action on Climate! Volunteer with the Sustainable Wellesley Team for 1 Hour or Many

9/23/2021

Fall is a great time to think about what you can do to make a difference in the urgent effort to address climate change. As you "ease" into fall schedules and, for those with kids, find yourself with a few extra hours now that school is back in session, consider signing up to volunteer with Sustainable Wellesley. Everyone is welcome. It's a great way to share a skill you have, build new ones, meet new people and do something that matters to you.

Our all-volunteer run, not-for-profit organization teams great people with a worthy mission to engage residents, businesses and the Town of Wellesley to take sustainable actions to protect our climate; reduce pollution of air, land and water; preserve biodiversity; minimize waste; and ensure environmental justice.

We know some of topics/skills below are things that you know and/or care a-lot about.

New Town Meeting members will participate in the Special Town Meeting that starts on October 25, 2021.

Residents may nominate themselves or have someone else nominate them.

Nominations for Precinct C are due on September 30 at 5:00 p.m. Nominations for Precincts D and E are due on September 28 at 5:00 p.m.

Create Healthy Habits While Helping Wellesley Reduce Its Greenhouse Gas Emissions

The new school year is a chance to begin new routines. Recent climate studies show that 30% of Wellesley's traffic is school-related transportation. Instead of driving, start some new school traditions this fall.

 - Get together with friends and walk to school
 - Form neighborhood walking groups with other parents, caretakers, families – take turns leading the group.
 - Ride bikes or scooters with neighbors.
-Check in with the Wellesley Public Schools to see if there is space on the bus: it is free if you live more than 2 miles from school.

More information on Wellesley's upcoming “Safe Routes to School” walking and biking initiative is coming out soon. Learn more about it from the Town's Mobility Committee members (see below). Better yet, consider participating in it by serving as a parent representative for your school.

Many Town Boards, Committees, and Commissions positions are available.
Take a look here. Positions are appointed by Wellesley Select Board.

Council on Aging: The Wellesley Council on Aging (COA) was established by legislative action in 1972 to coordinate and carry out programs and services to meet the needs and objectives of the population age 60 and over. The COA is funded through local taxes, state, federal, and local grants, and private contributions.

Cultural Council: The Wellesley Cultural Council administers money that the Massachusetts Cultural Council allots to Wellesley from state funds, including the state lottery. These funds support the arts, humanities and sciences in the Wellesley community. The Council also serves as an advocacy voice for the arts in our community and state.

Historic District Commission: The Commission's primary responsibility is the review of applications for alterations to exterior architectural features for the sixty-five (65) properties within the Cottage Street Historic District and four (4) Single Building Historic Districts.

Historical Commission: The Wellesley Historical Commission works to protect and preserve tangible evidence of the architectural, aesthetic, cultural, economic, political and social history of Wellesley.

Sustainable Energy Committee: The Sustainable Energy Committee (SEC) leads efforts to accomplish the goal adopted at the 2009 Annual Town Meeting (ATM): to reduce Town-wide greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions 10% below 2007 levels by 2013, to monitor and report progress toward that goal, and to propose further goals for emissions reductions to Town Meeting. The 2014 ATM adopted the SEC proposal to establish a new goal to reduce Town-wide emissions 25% below 2007 levels by 2020. The Unified Plan also identifies sustainability and energy conservation as important goals.

Veterans Advisory Board: The West Suburban Veterans’ Services District (WSVSD) operates under the provisions established by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts General Laws, Chapter 115. The office provides veterans and their dependents with a full range of benefits and services based on qualifications and eligibility requirements, using all available Federal, State and Town government agencies. The department also monitors the care and maintenance of all veterans’ graves and sixteen veterans’ monuments in Town. There are five board members with three year terms. Updated: April 15, 2021

Veterans’ Graves and Ceremonial Officer: This appointed position works with the Veterans Services Officer to register and maintain veterans’ graves including the placement of a United States flag on each grave on Memorial Day.
