On Thursday July 27 and Friday July 28 you can have a big impact with a few small actions!
Please reduce your electricity usage at the above times to save the Town (and therefore your taxes) a lot of $$$, and have a big impact on pollution and emissions.
We ask that you turn up your air conditioner a few degrees, turn off car chargers, dehumidifiers, pool filters, and/ or clothes dryers - anything non-essential with high electricity usage.
It's the peak that really matters here so you can even *pre-cool* your house before 5pm, as long as from 5pm-9pm you're using less A/C than usual.
The message from the Wellesley Municipal Light plant (WMLP) is here and you can sign up for personal alerts by emailing email@example.com.
If you want to know more about what and why, read on.
COST: Wellesley MLP supplies electricity to you at the same rate 24/7/365, but what they pay for that electricity varies wildly. This Thursday and Friday will be *extra wild* because of high temperatures driving everyone to crank the A/C. The highest demand of the year means generating the most electricity of the year, which means firing up whole power stations for just a few hours. Entire gas/coal/oil plants sit idle all year just to handle peaks. This costs a ton of money (technical term), which gets passed on to National Grid, Eversource, and to our MLP through astronomical rates for every kWh during a peak. Your rate stays the same and the Town of Wellesley swallows the difference. So, if you can reduce your usage at the right time we save money that would ultimately hit the Town budget and your taxes.
POLLUTION: But wait, there's more. Do they keep the cleanest, most efficient plants lying idle all year just in case there's a peak? No - it's the most dirty, polluting, wasteful plants that no one wants to use that are (thankfully) idle almost all the time. So when they ARE fired up they are filthy, high CO2 emissions plants. Every kWh is the most polluting and climate-damaging kWh of the entire year. And every kWh avoided during the peak reduces that harm.
So - pollution, climate, and your wallet are all impacted if you manage your electricity consumption a little between 5pm and 9pm this Thursday 27th and Friday 28th. Thank you!!
